Fight Like A Girl... A Boxing Guide of NYC

CKO

401 E 84th St, New York, New York 10028
CKO was actually my first boxing class I have ever taken. This popular chain is incredibly affordable. It’s also an extra bonus that the locations near me were offering your first class free.  The class was about 10 people so it wasn’t too overwhelming. I would recommend if you want to learn the basics in a setting where you don’t feel like everyone is watching you. The class is still small enough where the instructor will come over and check on you.

TITLE

455 W. 37th Street, New York, New York 10018

After a friend recommended it, I was eager to try the gym behind the fashionable boxing gloves company. The gym is crazy big, hosting a whopping 50 punching bags. It was a packed class and the format was hard to follow, due to the number of people that signed up. The instructor would show the sequence then expect everyone to do it. Basically, I couldn’t keep up so I just ended punching the bag for the 40 minutes. If you ever wondered where angry New Yorkers go to workout, they are at Title. The bag’s metal frame was shaking throughout the class, but I promise it’s nailed to the ground. The class was an even amount of men and women. Although gloves are free, I would recommend bringing your own because if you are anything like me you won’t want to put your hand in something that everyone else uses. Invest in a pair of gloves if you think you will like boxing. Better yet pick from the wide variety of colors that Title sells. I will definitely give this gym another chance for a private session.

GOTHAM

600 Washington St, New York, New York 10014

This gym has been on my list since it’s a favorite among the likes of Gigi Hadid and Ashley Benson from Pretty Little Liars.  Besides the gym being the perfect place for insta worthy pictures, I was actually pushed to my limit.  The class took place within a boxing ring. Not too crowded with about 10 people in the class. I went with my sister and we both were dripping in sweat within the first five minutes. I would recommend going with a friend because most of the class you pair off and take turns sparing. Even when you are holding the hand mitts, it’s still such a workout. What I liked about Gotham was that besides the instructor there was an assistant instructor that made their rounds and corrected us so that we wouldn’t be injured. They also were the friendliest when I would completely forget the sequences. My issues of telling my right from my left caught up with me only once when my sister accidentally knocked my nose with her glove. This class was definitely my favorite.  Now I just need to practice right and left sequences.
